Clinical Psychologist

 

Michelle Sorensen, founder of the Ottawa South Resiliency Clinic, is a registered clinical psychologist with 20 years of experience providing counselling and psychological services for a wide range of personal problems. These include anxiety and depression, interpersonal issues (both personal and professional), life transitions, and coping with chronic illness. She provides therapy for adults aged 18 and over, including seniors.  

 

Her approach to working with clients centers around a cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) framework, which is based on years of research and empirical evidence. She also integrates mindfulness training into her CBT approach. This involves developing self-compassion, accepting what we cannot control and living in the present moment. Michelle believes in a collaborative approach, based on her view that there are two experts in the room. She sees her role as a psychologist as being very active and takes the lead when her client needs guidance.

 

She is also very involved in the diabetes community across Canada and works with clients struggling with the psychological impact of living with diabetes.

 

Michelle has been registered with the Ontario College of Psychologists since 2006, first as a Psychological Associate and now as a Psychologist.  Michelle is also a member of the Ontario Psychological Association

 

She completed her Bachelor or Arts, Honours with first class standing in 1997 at Queen's University, and then graduated from her Master in Counselling Psychology at OISE at the University of Toronto in 2000.

 

She has been in private practice since 2002, initially under the supervision of other psychologists and then practising autonomously since her registration with the College of Psychologists.

Tesia Bryski, M.Ed

Tesia Bryski is a Registered Psychotherapist who specializes in Mindfulness-Based Interventions in Therapy, including Mindfulness-based Symptom Management, Mindfulness-integrated Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and Mindful Self-Compassion. She is an active practitioner, student, and teacher of mindfulness and meditation, and believes in a holistic approach to psychotherapy. Tesia approaches therapy through a warm and compassionate framework. She focuses on treating generalized anxiety, grief, trauma (PTSD and c-PTSD), relationship dynamics, work-related stress and burnout. Tesia offers psychotherapy in person, video sessions, and phone counselling to youth, teenagers, and adults.

Tesia is a certified MBSM teacher through the Ottawa Mindfulness Clinic, and is a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT-200) with the Yoga Alliance. Tesia integrates meditative and yoga practices in therapy. Tesia has additional training in meditation, Trauma-Informed Mindfulness and Trauma-informed Yoga. Catherine Gendron,m.ed

Catherine Gendron is a Registered Psychotherapist under the supervision of Clinical Psychologist Michelle Sorensen. Catherine graduated with a Master of Education in Counselling Psychology from the University of Ottawa and joined Ottawa South Resiliency Clinic after gaining experience working in the counselling field. She is able to provide individual counselling services in both official languages with clients aged 18 and over.

 

In her practice, Catherine incorporates elements from a variety of evidence-based clinical approaches including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and mindfulness techniques. She sees individuals with various issues including emotion regulation deficiencies, anxiety, depression, grief, domestic disputes, suicidal ideation, and self-harm. She believes in working closely with her clients to increase awareness, insight and positive change, fostering the resilience that will prepare them to manage the challenges that life presents.

David Guth is a registered member of the Ontario College of Psychologists with over 20 years of experience conducting psychological assessments and providing individual and family therapy. David's client population includes youth up to age 18 and their families.

 

He has worked in a variety of multi-disciplinary settings, including hospitals, community-based mental health centers, school boards, as well as his own private practice. Andrea Khalid, MA

Andrea Khalid has over 10 years of experience in the psychology field and specializes in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). She has a background in neuropsychology and assessment and in more recent years has focused on her passion for her clinical work.

 

Andrea graduated with a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology before opening a private practice. Currently, Andrea is working with adults who are experiencing challenges such as: anxiety and depression, postpartum depression, stress (including caregiver stress), self-esteem issues, interpersonal conflicts, relationship issues, workplace challenges, diabetes and other chronic illnesses. Andrea also has a clinical interest in working with first responders and their everyday work challenges, as well as providing counselling support to family members.

JOHN PLATT, MA

John Platt is a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. He holds a Master of Arts degree in counselling and spirituality, as well as a Bachelor of Arts (honours) degree in clinical psychology. After providing counselling and psychotherapy in the Ottawa area for the last three years, John is excited to be part of the Resiliency Clinic as of June 2020.

 

John emphasizes providing a friendly and relaxing space that caters to the individual needs of the client. His therapeutic approach is integrative, pulling from multiple research based theories and treatment methods. In particular, John draws on attachment theory, polyvagal theory, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT).

 

John works with individuals over the age of 18 and has experience in a variety of issues, including anxiety, depression, interpersonal difficulties, workplace stress, trauma, grief, suicidality, self harm, addictions, and self esteem. He collaborates with clients to develop meaningful understanding of themselves and to construct appropriate action plans to create lasting change.

Shauna Thaler Adeland, MSW, RSW

As a Registered Social Worker/Psychotherapist Shauna is ready to help connect with anyone who is experiencing difficulties or stress in their lives. She has a special interest in grief and loss, mental health and wellness, chronic disease management, and diabetes distress while always supporting clients to develop a new road map to move forward.

Shauna holds a Bachelor of Social Work from King’s University College and a Masters of Social Work from McGill University (2004). During her postgraduate studies, she specialized in grief counseling with particular interests in grieving and overcoming losses associated with health conditions and life transitions.

With over 15 years of experience, Shauna is able to pull from her training and knowledge to tailor an approach in collaboration with clients to suit their needs and situations that are grounded in evidence-based practice. Crystal Tierney, MA

Registered Psychotherapist (qualifying)

Crystal Tierney is a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) who works from a trauma and body-centered perspective. She is passionate about instilling an empowering framework into her practice. Crystal helps individuals on their transformative healing journey, which may include working through a history of trauma, anxiety, anger, depression, or guilt and shame. She works with modalities including tending to the nervous system, mindfulness, and helping individuals draw upon their own restorative practices.

Laura D'Amico, MA

Wendy Nuttall, B.A

Registered Psychotherapist

Wendy specializes in substance abuse, and concurrent mental health problems, depression, anxiety, internet overuse, and emotion regulation problems. She has more than 20 years of experience. Prevention and early intervention of substance abuse are areas of focus, particularly with young people. She is accepting referrals for youth and adults aged 18 and over for individual therapy. 

Wendy spent 12 years in the Youth Psychiatry Program at The Royal Ottawa as a Substance Abuse Specialist and Dialectical Behaviour Therapist.  With her colleagues, she developed and implemented their DBT Program. She currently works on the Community Mental Health Team. She has gained knowledge and experience from experts from a number of different disciplines. Wendy began her career in the Substance Use and Concurrent Disorders Program at the Royal, a 28-day abstinence-based treatment facility for addictions. 

Wendy is licensed by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. She received her Bachelor degree in psychology from Carleton University.  She has a diploma in Chemical Dependency Counseling from Algonquin College and a diploma from McMaster University in Employee Assistance Programming.  She participated in intensive training for Dialectical Behaviour Therapy with Behaviour Tech (now The Linehan Institute).

Wendy is skilled in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT). Her trauma-informed approach includes mindfulness and interventions based on neuroscience. Therapy often aims to practice dealing with difficult emotions, improve interpersonal relationships, and increase self-efficacy. 

Wendy has been invited to speak at a number of mental health symposiums and youth education days and was a subject matter specialist for Project ECHO with CHEO’s Child and Youth Mental Health Program. She has participated in a number of research projects and is a member of the Ontario Association of Mental Health Professionals.
